Analysis of three Digipaks

In Media we looked at the use of digipaks and whether they are effective today as the percentage of consumers purchasing music from iTunes and Amazon are higher. A digipak is a modern approach to CD/DVD packaging, usually made of thick cardboard and it allows the possibility of including a lot more information on the band/artist.
A digipak could include these following things :
  • Name of the artist/band
  • Name of the album
  • Track listings for the album
  • Production information, including copyright and company details
The overall digipak style should include elements of graphic design- not just images taken from the video. It should consist of 3-4 colours max and no more than two fonts. It also must create some sort of visual link with the advertisement.  The advert should include the release date and it should display the artist name and title. It also should include tour dates, reviews, websites and the record label.

I analysed two digipaks...

1. Rihanna 'Loud'

There is a close up shot on Rihanna looking down with a feminine pose. The artist doesn't reveal her face or her body which shows that she is already a well established artist in the industry which a huge fanbase. Fans will already know who she is therefore buying her album. The colour red is used throughout the digipak as Rihanna's hair, lips and the use of roses are all red. This fits with the overall style of the digipak. The design on the CD's is very simple yet effective and goes along with the theme of roses. There is a sense of femininity with the artwork. The cover is simple yet it goes with the name of the album as the colour red is 'loud'.

2. Florence + The Machine 'Lungs'

The album cover is simple with an image of Florence and an emphasis on the lungs as it is the name of the album. I also like the simplicity of the CD design and will also use this for inspiration when I create my CD design. The back cover of the album is simple yet effective. They all link together using the colour black and the fonts used for the album name and tracklist.
